2020 Year in Review

Where do I start?

2020, to me, is the most un-natural way that life could be. Life, in a modern world, is supposed to be better, higher in quality and more comfortable, but not this year.

The Pandemic

COVID-19, I hate to put this one at the top, but living with this wicked virus is a new “normal” now, at least for a few more months.

Once we stop fighting, we lose the game, and nobody wants to be a loser, including myself.

How do I cope with it? Not so good at the beginning, everything started to shutdown, need to work from home, couldn’t go out for leisure activities, etc…

I’m sure that the whole humanity in this planet has every right to be upset, to be frustrated. But guess what? Once we stop fighting, we lose the game, and nobody wants to be a loser, including myself.

So, one, or even ten, hundred, thousand of viruses, life needs to go on. I was struggled at first, but I managed to pull myself up, and started to tick the boxes, whichever I could do to at least feel that I’m still helpful & not lagged behind.

Looking at it from another perspective, the more limitation, the more setback, the stronger people will thrive.

I’m grateful that I’m living in a country where everyone do their parts to protect not just them, but for the whole community. Added to that, I’m glad that my motherland is well-protected, my parents are safe, and I’m still able to talk with them everyday.

I would like to thank every healthcare workers, who have sacrificed their time, wellness, or even their own life just for one sacred goal - heal the world. You are the true heroes, the god-sent angels, the world will never forget these contributions 🙏

SRE

Work wise, it was a fruitful year for me, I’ve chosen the right job to do, the right place to work and the right time to be.

Reliable, visible, reusable.

Despite challenges, but with the full support from trustworthy manager, I’ve been able to work on the things I’m passionate about, which made me become a valuable part of the organisation.

Together, as a great team, We’ve achieved many goals:

  • The network, servers, or infrastructure as a whole, is more reliable.
  • What’s happening inside the system is more visible.
  • The programs, the core logics for provisioning new environments are more reusable.

I’ve also learnt so many new things here, not only on technical, but also on how to be a better human being.

Tech-wise, cloud-native, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code,… continue to be the important topics, which I managed to get a good understanding and applied at work.

Communication-wise, being a senior member brought me a lot of opportunities to coach other junior teammates, and I absolutely love that. To me, seeing the person you spent times to upskill, to work with able to step up and get the jobs done, is a big accomplishment.

Self

This year started with my expectation of having a once-in-a-lifetime 42km full marathon, but things, as we all know, tend to go the wrong way as it’s supposed to be!

Live the fullness of life

I’m not sure when, but my laziness & the virus are already BFF 😫 Something that I absolutely need to break down and get back to healthy lifestyle in 2021.

Starting with jogging, basketball on weekly basis. Hopefully I will be able to get back to my great form soon.

In term of relationship, although not being to see each other, my love ones are & will always be by my side and support me during the darkest time. Big thanks to them, and I’ll do everything I could to support them whenever they need.

I wish everyone health, prosperity & happiness.
